Port of Karumba
The Port of Karumba is located at the mouth of the Norman River in the south-east corner of the Gulf of Carpentaria.
The port provides for general cargo, fuel, fisheries products and the export of live cattle. Karumba also acts as a transhipment port for Mornington Island, other Gulf communities and the Port of Weipa for the majority of the year, with refrigerated semi-trailers bringing goods north to Karumba for transhipment.
New Century Resources has also re-established transhipment operations through the Port of Karumba. NCR took over the Century Mine facilities, both at the port and mine for annual export of zinc over an estimated mine life of 6.5 years.
The company has also negotiated with Ports North to maintain the channel depth over the life-time of the project.
