Electricity Connection
BERTHING INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONNECTION TO THE SHORE SUPPLY DIRECTLY OR THROUGH AN ON-BOARD ISOLATING TRANSFORMER
All supply flexible cords must be in good condition and have a current ‘TEST’ tag attached.
This berthing facility provides power for use on your vessel with a direct connection to the shore supply, which is connected to earth. Unless you have an isolating transformer fitted on board to isolate the electrical system of your vessel from the shore supply system, corrosion (electrolysis) could damage your vessel or surrounding vessels.
The earthing of metal parts on vessels with non-metallic hulls may result in alkaline degradation of timber (including wooden plugs in boats of reinforced plastic construction).
THE VESSEL’S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM MUST COMPLY WITH AUSTRALIAN STANDARD (AS/NZ 3004 and AS/NZ 3760)
Safety Notes
- The supply voltage at this berthing facility is at single phase neutral and earth 240V or 3-phase neutral and earth 415V, 50 Hz supplied by socket outlets which will accommodate standard Australian plugs.
- Where a vessel is provided with more than one supply, the supplies must have the same method of connection, that is, by direct connection, connection through an isolating transformer with the hull metal parts bonded, or connection through an isolating transformer with no bonding to the metal parts of the vessel.
- Means must be taken to prevent the connecting flexible cord (cord extension set) from sagging or falling into the water and particularly, to prevent either end of the flexible cord falling into the water if it should become disengaged.
- For this purpose, tie-bars are provided alongside most socket outlets for anchorage of a loop of tie cord.
- Only one vessel supply flexible cord shall be connected to any one socket outlet.
- The supply flexible cord shall be arranged to permit normal movement of a vessel at its mooring without undue stress.
- The supply flexible cord must be in one length, and must not be used while coiled.
- The supply flexible cord shall be arranged so that it will not obstruct persons walking in the vicinity of the vessel or where it may be damaged by vehicular traffic or other vessels.
- The entry of moisture and salt into a vessel’s appliance-inlet may cause a hazard. Examine carefully and clean before connecting to the supply.
- Each socket outlet is provided with an isolating switch, and/or an over current circuit-breaker and/or an earth-leakage current protection device (RCD).
- It is dangerous for unskilled persons to attempt repairs or alterations.
On Arrival
- Connect the supply flexible cord to the vessel appliance inlet socket.
- Check that the shore socket outlet isolating switch is in the off position.
- Connect the supply flexible cord to shore socket outlet.
- Ensure the supply flexible cord is secure and prevented from sagging or falling into the water. Use tie-bars where provided.
- The supply flexible cord must not be tethered around metal wharf access ladders.
- Turn the shore socket outlet isolating switch to the ‘on’ position.
- In the event of the loss of supply, check the shore socket outlet circuit breaker/RCD, and reset if in the ‘off’ position.
- If this device requires resetting on more than one occasion, you will be required to review your vessel’s power loading and reduce it to the rating of the shore socket outlet.
- If your supply is not returned after resetting the circuit breaker or RCD, please contact the berthing facility management.
Before Leaving
- Ensure that the supply is switched to the ‘off’ position, the flexible cord is disconnected and any tie cord loops are unhooked.
- The flexible cord should be disconnected first from the berthing facility socket outlet and then from the vessel appliance inlet. Any cover that may be provided to protect the appliance inlet from water should be securely replaced.
The flexible cord should be coiled up and stored in a dry location where it will not be damaged.
Electricity is connected to all wharves with both single-phase power and 3-phase power available at most berths on arrangement with the Seaport Operations Office.
Advance notification is required. Electricity is charged at Ergon Energy Tariff rates. Vessels connecting to shore power supply must follow the Electrical Connection procedures.
