Ports North is responsible for the development and management of port facilities vital to the economic growth of Cairns and regional centres in Far North Queensland.  Ports North has extensive property, marina, tourism and cargo facilities in Cairns and across nine regional and remote ports.

The Ports North Cadet Program is designed to provide new and sustainable opportunities by developing individuals with practical skills and knowledge across port operations.

Reporting to the Manager Port Services, you will be required to undertake a development role at Ports North to provide effective support and assistance in the day to day operations of Ports North facilities and assisting with operational and maintenance activities to contribute to the upkeep and safety of port infrastructure.

Key tasks will include:

  •  Provide high level customer service to port users, stakeholders and members of the public.  
  • Maintain an effective port operations radio and telephone communications centre. 
  • Assist with providing port services to vessels using Ports North facilities. 
  • Undertake general security, safety and asset monitoring and compliance reporting, patrol and inspect port facilities and report outcomes. 
  • Assist with regulating and managing activities in accordance with port notices, relevant legislation and internal policies and procedures. 
  • Undertake duties as defined in Emergency Response and Security Plans. 
  • Assist with monitoring, controlling and managing vessels, pedestrians, traffic and other facility users as required. 
  • Monitor security, safety, operational incidents or events and respond and report in accordance with policies, plans and procedures.  
  • Assist with assigned tasks to deliver a range of services in support of port operations.
  • Collect, record and/or input accurately into systems berth occupancy, shipping information, cargo and other information required for determination of port charges and management of port operations. 
  • Operate plant, equipment and assets in a safe, efficient and effective manner taking account of Workplace, Health and Safety requirements. 
  • Undertake other duties as directed, relevant to experience and knowledge.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and work in accordance with the Safety Management Framework including use of Standard Work Procedures and Job Safety Maps.

 Essential Requirements:

  •  Applicants must be Australian residents and hold a current Australian driver’s licence.
